PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT
At Albuquerque Nursery School we believe that all children have the right to learn with a curriculum that is developmentally appropriate for each of them. We recognize that children are unique individuals who are developing their own personal beliefs, values, and knowledge base through individual life experiences. By respecting children's uniqueness, we are enriching the classroom community, helping children build positive self-concepts and encouraging them to value their own thoughts as well as those of others.

Children should be introduced to alternative points of view and experiences in order to develop qualities of objectivity and empathy. This also broadens their knowledge and their views of people and the world around them.

We also understand that children grow when given the opportunity to make important choices concerning their behavior, education, and lives. Children should be given encouragement and the opportunity to practice problem solving and decision making. Children need to learn to make responsible choices for themselves. The fostering of such independent critical thinking and decision making skills should be the goal of all education. We feel that if we hold high expectations for children, they will hold high expectations for themselves and will strive to realize their goals.

We believe that learning occurs in different ways and at different rates, depending upon the individual student. We also believe every student has academic strengths, needs, and talents. We believe it is our responsibility to teach to those strengths, provide opportunities for sharing talents, and address areas of need by preparing lessons that vary in content and instructional style; and by providing rich and engaging experiences that appeal to a variety of learners. Our goal is to provide opportunities for students to learn and practice skills required in school and in later life. By providing these skills along with valuable learning experiences, we hope to nurture independence and reflection on thought and behavior in addition to supporting a lifelong love of learning.

We believe that parental involvement is essential for children to fully succeed in school. At Albuquerque Nursery School, parents are always welcome to participate in as many activities as they may choose. Through their involvement parents are shown that we not only value, but need their contributions, insights, and ideas. We believe that it is our responsibility to make sure that parents are given the opportunity to help, whether it is in or out of the physical classroom, and to make sure they feel welcome to do so.

We agree with the philosophy that the best environment for learning includes one that is clean, safe, and distraction free. That ideal learning environment also includes being equipped with appropriate materials supporting the curriculum, and which are organized to foster optimal learning by children either in groups or individually.
